The Soviet defence of Stalingrad was ideological not strategic, because Stalin would not accept the loss of the city bearing his name. This is why there was no regard for human life, well over a million Soviet troops died in this battle, most of them unnecessarily and to little purpose.
Soviet victory there was not even achieved in the city, it was through encirclement achieved well outside the city, by breaking through Romanian lines.
