There is no denying that had the US used a nuclear device on Russia back then that all the turmoil today would have been avoided.

It could have and should have been used , without any threat of reprisals , and the same thing applies today in Ukraine.

There is little chance of Russia escalating beyond the use of tactical nukes should they be introduced, it would level the playing field considerably.

It does not follow that just because an advanced tactical weapon is used that everyone immediately resorts to strategic weapons.
