There was no Ukraine or Russia a millennium back. Ukrainians were eastern Kievian Slavs and Russians were northern Slavs mixed many other groups. Ukrainians were called Ruthenians at one stage. When Kivian oblast was a thriving trading and cultural centre, Moscow was marshy land. First cathedral in Kiev was built in early 1000.s Moscow 500 years later.

In 1500's Ivan the Terrible formed Russia consisting primarily of northen Slavs, Swedish/Finns(Hun,Sami), Roma and many other eastern and central Asian inhabitants to be called Russian empire. Rus is not modern day Russians. Ottomans/Tatars/Iranians called them Rus means Vikins.
