I don’t see any ‘risky play’ by the US, no ‘play’ at all. They are simply supporting a sovereign nation which is under attack by a fascist dictatorship. Almost all Western nations are providing such support. Europe has belatedly realised that Putinist Russia is an unreliable partner and is pivoting away from Russian energy.

The ‘Kherson Offensive’ will be a slow and methodical grinding down of Russian forces. Probing Ukrainian attacks will continue and will have greater success the more degraded the Russian forces become.
