I think Putin is just desperate for the revenue as he know this war will now last years and their economy is stuffed for decade if not forever so he will need these gas revenue to fund the war. Otherwise he would have just switched off the gas pipeline straight away to put bigger pressure on the EU but I can't see these fund allowing him to continue the war for years anyway.
