In world war 2 the Soviet Union had desperate counter offensives with high casualties, but at least they gained some ground in those counter offensives, like 100´s of kilometers, still senseless, but that was a different type of war the Soviet Union was not prepared for yet won. Russia has been getting ready for this war since 2008, this is why the casualties are so low, when the files become unclassified, this will be tough along Jackson´s Valley campaign and Napoleon´s Italian campaign
