That’s not how world works. We don’t carve up nations based on ethnic referenda. It’s not acceptable under international law and it’s acceptable under the UN Charter.
If you want the world to work on the basis of ‘referenda for all’ then lets have them anywhere in the world where an ethnic group exists. Russia would cease to exist in its present form, it would fragment into about 22 different nations. Same with China, it is made up of a host of different ethnic and linguistic groups.

The reason we are all scrutinising ethnic make up in Ukraine is only because of Putinist efforts to turn it into a fragmented failed state. But Ukraine isn’t some isolated case. Few nations in Europe would be totally homogenous in their ethnic blend.
