I think you are definitely correct here Beanjet. The term used in International Relations theory is bloodletting.
Bloodletting: By aiding the opponent of a rival great power, a conflict can become protracted and costly. The U.S.-Vietnam conflict, and the Soviet-Afghanistan conflict, are two examples.
The US government has openly stated that the sanctions the west is using against Russia have the aim of weakening Russia's economy. While the war drags on not only do the sanctions continue to inflict damage but the costs of the military operation are also biting hard. As experts have indicated America appears determined to fight this war down to the last Ukrainian.
