IMO both NATO & the USA will have to carefully & honestly analyse the reasons
for this war before there is an enduring solution. For two Nuke Powers (ie: NATO-USA vs Russia)
to confront one another on the battlefield is Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD), so short
of an insane Nuke War, there will have to be an appreciation of both sides fears and ambitions
before a lasting peace is reached.

At this stage we have a situation like the Surgeon rushing the patient into the operating
room without first asking the patient for symptoms & diagnosing the problem first.(I forger the source of the metaphor)

And, This, IMO, is what we have in this war from both sides.

Even if Russia is beaten back to its border (IMO, it wont give up The Crimea.....period)
the issues why it invaded and why that may be repeated in future have not been resolved.

For us here, national security is a huge issue and the thought of China setting up
fishing ports in the Solomons , Southern PNG & East Timor (let alone Nuke Silos) gives us the shivers
Just imagine how the Russians feel with an Iron Fence of NATO gear on your western border
and a half dozen Nuke Silos with launchers, rockets & nuke warheads aimed at you with
the prospect of a Western First Strike snuffing you out...eh?

Its that kind of empathy that makes us human and the basis of civilisation !

Otherwise why should we be interested in the Ukraine war ?
