It wasn't a democratic country. It was a country that had opposing views and beliefs and was at war with its self. Civil war. One group was supported by the west and the other by the East. Ukraine's had a history of corruption and gendercide. ( both sides). Russia's support for the selected regions is no different then the Wests for not sure who they call themselves Ukraine. But countries are made up of all people not ones selected. NATO dropped the ball and America picked it up and tossed the thing. Europe doesn't need America!. America needs Europe.
