Some of the points you make are fair which is unusual as I'm getting used to the "Putin/Bad" crowd in this group.
My point has never been that Putin is a good and fair minded guy. Good and fair-minded guys don't take control in Russia. What you're asking me to do is take the view that Putin should be judged by liberal rose tinted standards? My view is that none of that is possible. He could not survive and some other group would take control
So against that backdrop you and others are expecting him to diplomatically deal with American/Soros meddling in a neighbouring country and installing someone he sees as a US puppet. He is meant to gently acquiesce to an affront to Russian power and independence. The simple fact is while he can he will act in his own and Russia's interests.
My take on this is the US war machine has seen this as opportunity to hide behind the cloak of democracy and poke the bear to start yet another European war to both further their power and increase their wealth. Ukraine is the victim. Whether Putin is a good or consistent guy in all this seems secondary, they want a war and he is their means of getting one.
Re "That Russia meddles in other countries election processes is well known"
But recently shown to be wildly exaggerated in 2016.
