After the US funded and organised a fascist led coup.
When Ukraine voted, they voted for Yanukovych who was Russian leaning.
It was unacceptable to the US that Ukrainians could vote for a government the US didn't want.

So the US paid out $5 billion to get the government they wanted which exposes your ridiculous narrative that Ukraine is a "sovereign", "independent" nation which isn't being used by NATO as a military launching pad for NATO war against Russia.
