This is only because you're embedded in the West and an idealised view of Russia and can't see that this is not a situation where we're saying the West is always correct in the past

Yes it's had issues and stlll has many but right now Putin is a war criminal and he's using the threat of nuclear war to blackmail the US and NATO powers into submission.

The world isn't historically short of war criminals but this is now.
