Both of those wars were about defending their own lands. Maybe he should have brought up Russia's invasion of Afghanistan as an example instead. Or perhaps he should have talked about the Russo-Japanese war, or what happened to the Tsar after they were humiliated in WWI, or how the Russians were forced to burn down Moscow as they fled the city when Napoleon's army was marching in.
