EU to impose tariffs on Russian grain imports - report

The EU is preparing to levy tariffs on food from Russia and Belarus, the Financial Times reports.

The European Commission is in the coming days expected to impose a duty of £81-per-tonne on cereals from Russia and Belarus, the FT reports, citing people familiar with the plans.

Tariffs of 50% will also be placed on oil seeds.

The reported move comes as farmers in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia, all of which are members of the EU, call for changes to restrictions placed on them by the EU's Green Deal plan to tackle climate change.

They are also calling for the re-imposition of customs duties on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine after an EU decision in 2022 to waive duties on Ukrainian food imports, which farmers in the EU argue undercut their prices.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has also called for an EU ban on imports of Russian and Belarusian agricultural products.
