Yep - while Russia's stance is clearly out of step with modern day Western society and 'equality' it is yet another example and reminder of the unlevel playing field that we play under on the global stage, especially when conforming to UN charters.

The UN would not dare touch Russia on its stance on Anti-Gay legislation, but it is going after some 'soft touch' African nations like Malawi.

Reminds me of the hypocrisy of the UN and lack of action against Indonesia on its Asylum Seeker stance (Indonesia are not a signatory to the UN Asylum Seeker charter and so are not bound by any rules) versus Australia (as a signatory) copping flack on its handling - and further, Indonesia's attitude to Australia turning back boats:

"The government of Indonesia deplores and rejects the violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity by the Australian vessels," the statement read.

"The government of Indonesia underlines that any of such violation of whatever basis constitutes a serious matter in bilateral relations of the two countries.

"Indonesia therefore demands that such violation will not recur in the future.

"The government of Indonesia has the right to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity in accordance with international laws and the charter of the United Nations.

"Indonesia demands that such operation conducted by the Australian government that led to this incident to be suspended until formal clarification is received and assurances of no recurrence of such incidents has been provided."

Now surely Indonesia qualify for the 2014 International Hypocrisy award.

Back to the general issue at hand - Political In/Correctness at both ends of the spectrum and secondary to this, the unlevel playing field it creates in international dealings between countries.
