The Russian Special Forces should not be under estimated because of what limited information or footage you or I may be privy to today.
The actions of Spec Ops teams will vary upon the actions of the Terrorists and in this case persons willing to die for their cause, whilst killing innocent babies.
Before condemming the Russian Military's actions you would have to consider the circumstances in which they committed their action. How much of the school precinct was wired for explosion, where and how many snipers did the terrorist have keeping the S/Forces at bay and in particular, distanced. What tactical experience did the terrorist have, no doubt extensive as mercenaries were located on site. The considerations are endless in regards to this incident.
Do not think that because the Russians actions were initiated by the explosions of body bombers/ buildings, together with execution of stationary and fleeing children, that our SAS would behave any different under the same circumstances.
Remember that the Russian Spec Forces have been at constant war and in Operational Theatres way before the Independence of Timor etc.
It is a sad day for the Western world, but it must highlight the lengths that the terrorists will go to in attempts to achieve their goals.
