" Russia will team up with North and South Korea in a railroad construction project that could restore peace between the two neighbors. The link will extend the world’s longest railroad, so goods can be shipped between Europe and Korea 3x faster.
Russia’s Minister for Far East Development Aleksander Galushka announced the plan to extend the Trans-Siberian Railroad at a meeting in Vladivostok on Thursday.
The expansion would provide a link between the Korean peninsula and Europe’s $17 trillion economy, making Russia a major transit route between Europe and Asia. Shipping by rail is nearly 3 times faster than via the Suez Canal, Russian Railways CEO Vladimir Bakunin has said.
“We have agreed to launch trilateral projects between Russia, DPRK and South Korea with a focus on the railroad project. It’s important to extend the Trans-Siberian Railroad to the Korean peninsula. It will serve to stabilize and improve the situation on the Korean peninsula as a whole,” Galushka said at the sixth annual Russian-Korean meeting on trade, economic, educational, and scientific cooperation. ... MOSCOW -- A Russian-led railway project has kicked off in North Korea, marking the latest effort between Moscow and Pyongyang to deepen ties.
High-ranking officials from both sides held meetings this year, agreeing on economic cooperation across a wide range of fields, including trade, finance, natural resources, and investment. The railway project is seen as the first fruit of these agreements in the infrastructure field.
Major Russian construction company Mostovik will head up the project, under which an estimated $25 billion will be spent to modernize 3,500km of railroad. Russia's public and private sectors will likely shoulder the bulk of the outlays, and in return gain interests in gold, rare-metal and other mineral resource projects in North Korea. ... "

A report by the Siberian Times has detailed one of Russia’s more outlandish schemes to date: a super motorway that would connect the eastern border of Russia with Alaska in the United States. The highway would make it possible to drive from the United Kingdom to the US, with help from ferries, tunnels, and trains.
The plan, unveiled at a meeting at the Russian Academy of Science and presented by the head of Russia Rail Vladimir Yakunin, also calls for a high-speed railway to be built alongside the motorway. Both routes would support new cities and industries created as a result of the construction, the Siberian Times writes. ... "
" ... Here’s our rough interpretation of the route (the new railway would help cars hop across the Bering Strait, we think):

Alongside the train track and road, pipelines for oil and gas and new electricity and water supply lines would be put in place. The network would total around 12,400 miles. The aim is to link Asia with Europe as it would run from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

    Unfortunately stuff happens ...

In response to North Korea launching a satellite into space, South Korea decided to suspend a trilateral project with North Korea and Russia, which would have linked the three countries via rail and sea. Under the project, coal and bottled water would have been exported to South Korea through North Korea's port city of Rajin and Russia's border city of Khasan.

Fingers crossed, wouldn't want a war or something else come along.

The payoff for Russia if it all comes off would be huge in gaining interests in the gold, rare-metal and other mineral resource projects in North Korea.
