IMHO the first rule regarding trading derivatives is MONEY MANAGEMENT ... leverage offered by derivatives works both ways so TIGHT STOPS and practice discipline to pull the trigger when required.
The second rule is to have a practiced methodology affording a NEAR TERM VIEW of the probable move in the Underlying.
As a rule of thumb ... for a 2-3 week trade, Option selection is one-two clicks (1-2x50c) OTM with about 6-8 weeks to Expiry with plan to exit ATM at highest liquidity.
Paper-trade and then take modest positions until CONFIDENCE to enter, manage and exit positions smoothly.
Cheers ... tight stops.
