The ATM has decent delta and the best gamma and the first ITM offers a bit of downside protection - probably something a new trader would appreciate.
Actually, come think of it - ATM is probably the best deal for any trader.
Sure - you may not get the same leverage as OTM options - but you get a higher dollar return for the same number of contracts purchased which, after all, is what the game is all about.
As you indicated - options trading is all about probabilities - and the further OTM you move the lower the probability you will finish ITM - or indeed - even profitable.
