Two points:
If he can hold his place, and he is available, he plays.
Why not give him the vice captain's position and allow him to mentor the new captain until he can't hold his place. This is something each state should have worked out 5 years ago. Paul Rieffel, David Boon, Stuart Law and so on ... should all have mentored their next state captain respectively (whilst they are not on Australian duties - as in Warne, Ponting, Love?)
... in preparation for the replacement Australian captain. Then the next Australian captain would have been a no brainer!!
