You look back at the days of Border, Chappell..they were true inspirational leaders. They all had there "Hard Knocks" but came back with the courage and determination which is what sets them apart from other players.
Steve Waugh proved that today.
You can appoint a person to be Captain, but it does not guarantee their leadership and maturity to carry the priviledge. Steve Waugh was born for the job.
I agree that they should prime someone for the role in preparation for Steve's retirement. However, they should not tell him to leave. He already knows when its time.
Gilchrist would be my pick to take up the role.
