Not sure batteries are the best option , currently SA is looking at it to increase grid reliability , especially in times of extremely high peak demand that cause blackouts and load shedding. That doesn't happen that often in a year . The problem a wind generator needs to solve is what to do when the wind is blowing and demand is low and hence low prices, or even negative prices. Thats a regular occurrence , especially at night.
Perhaps Solar makes more sense for batteries because you can shift that midday generation peak into the evening , with wind it could make sense at a grid level , but i suspect IFN would already be at the party if it made financial sense.
It will be interesting to see if a rule change occurs for 30 to 5 min auctions on the NEM and if it changes things ....in that scenario being able to throw energy into the grid for short random bursts possibly balancing solar as well as peaks might be appealing , but these ideas really need careful analysis of the grid and demand which i don't have.
Batteries also have the capacity to reduce peak demand and prices ,as does solar ,which isn't great news for a wind farm operator.
Enlarging the inter-connecters between SA and NSW/Vic and allowing a greater amount of excess generation from SA is probably the best bet - as far as blue sky IMHO hydrogen production looks very interesting.
