Funny you ask that question Jessie, I think the civil libers/the left have a lot to answer for and their track record doesn't look too good. They opposed Campbell Newman's get tough approach on child sex offenders and just before you posted your question I listened to a podcast by Gerard Henderson of the Australian. Here is an exert of his article and his podcast from yesterday:

"In an article in the September 1984 issue of Quadrant magazine entitled “Paedophile Liberation and the Radical Homosexuals”, writer Andrew Lansdown documented how pederasty had become fashionable within sections of the Australian Left in the 1970s and 80s. He quoted an article in OutRage magazine which declared its “defence of the civil liberties of paedophiles”."

And if anyone cares to listen to how ingrained paedophilia can be and covered up by the left, here is an interesting podcast referring to the ABC and how the left in Britain a few decades ago allowed for it to flourish.
