IMO the main reason for Rudd's demise was he did not realise the need to bring others on board & the need to delegate
The ETS was miscalculated - I think he still believed in fighting for Global Warming but the after Copenhagen and the emails scandal and denialist's successful fear and doubt political campaign he realised the ETS was likely to lose him the election -
Voters could understand "Great Big New Tax" but could not understand a new fangled market based mechanism being the most efficient way to price carbon. But note to those blaming his delay on the ETS: losing an election on the ETS would have given Abbott a mandate to do nothing
But it was interpreted by the electorate as only token beleif in dealing with Global Warming - Something snapped and electorate doubted whether Rudd believed in anything - so his approval plummetted
and within his party his rule from the top bred resentment so with his approval plummetting (still respectable given Howard was at similar levels in the same stage after his first election) the party found little reason to keep him
