In Australia there is no Commonwealth Government (or Reserve Bank) guarantee of bank deposits at all (I don't think there are any State Gov't guarantees either but not sure). The only protection depositors have is that Australian depositors have priority over all other liabilities, and if a bank is in trouble APRA can step in to run the bank for the protection of depositors.
