The earlier trial was a small number of patients - and was curtailed after the company doing the trial hit financial problems or decided to look at other products (cant recall).
The product never got to the stage of considering CE..at that time
and to get acceptance in the medical area - they need an adequately powered trial to show statistical significance. My recollection is that the stats side was discussed in one of the newsletters in early 2014.
