    Tassal salmon plan for Okehampton Bay a step closer after council backing

    A council on Tasmania's east coast has approved an application for seafood giant Tassal to expand salmon production into the area, amid calls it should have waited for a government inquiry to deliver its findings on the environmental impact.

    Tassal, which featured as part of a Four Corners report into the industry in October, is pushing ahead with plans to open 28 new pens at Okehampton Bay, in the face of opposition from locals concerned about potential pollution issues.

    Tassal's move into the area stalled in August after the Tasmanian Government assembled the Marine Farming Planning Review Panel to review the proposal, given that the lease expansion plans were first approved in 1998.
    It has partnered with Okehampton Bay's lease holder Spring Bay Seafoods for Tassal to use its water leases should the plan go ahead.
