Anyone know what is going on here?New technology from SaltX enablesproduction of "green quick lime" – results verified by the industry
SaltXTechnology´s innovation is called Electric Arc Calciner (EAC), which canelectrify the production of quick lime and at the same time separate and captureCO2 from the limestone. The innovation has the potential to remove allemissions from the lime industry. Leading actors in the sector have verifiedthe positive results.
Limeis one of the most common materials in the world. It is an essential materialfor manufacturing steel, building materials, paper, and is also used inpurification of water among many other use cases. Together with the cementindustry, they account for 19 percent of total CO2 emissions in Sweden. In theprocess of manufacturing quick lime, a technique called calcination is used. Inthis process, CO2 emissions happen on two occasions, during fossil-fueledheating and when the material reaches a specific temperature.
With SaltX innovation, fossil fuel gets replacedwith renewable energy, and CO2 emissions are isolated and captured in theproduction as a by-product. Lars Croon, Head of Process at SaltX, says:
- Today'smanufacturing process for lime and cement is outdated and unsustainable, andemissions must be heavily decreased. We have rethought and applied innovativetechnology and knowledge from the ground up to create a net-zero solution thatis scalable and has the potential to get started producing "greenlimestone."
Industrystakeholders have verified the results, which level up with the standard of 96%in calcination rate, have already gained significant interest from the market.Due to the increased market interest, SaltX and ABB have deepened theircollaboration for the electrification of the lime industry. Carl-Johan Linér,CEO of SaltX comments:
- Theelectrification of energy-intensive industries is crucial for making thenecessary green transition to reach net-zero emissions. With our patent pendingelectrified calcination technology, we enable the production of decarbonizedlime, which is a fantastic effort from our engineering team.
Theinnovation will also be used as a charging reactor for SaltX energy storagesolutions to increase charging temperatures for increased power andscalability.
