"We" afford to pay 40 players at each of 18 AFL clubs, and 30 players at each of 17 NRL clubs, so there's more than 1200 guys being paid as full time footballers. The Matildas drew more than 75 000 fans to watch them at one of their World Cup games. I don't know how many we (Or at least Football Australia) can afford to pay handsomely, but one suspects significantly more than 11.
