There are many parallels between BHP and the Great Salad Oil scandal of 1963. In a nutshell an unfortunate incident puts a severe dent on a corporation's short term earnings. In 1963 the GSOS wiped out American Express' earnings and the share price plummeted- but they bounced back a year or so later. Warren Buffet saw the opportunity, mopped up all available stock and made a killing. I guess the time to get in was when the price was $17 but given the current commodity prices there is still plenty of upside.
