To understand hazer process, 1st of all cracking of methane is possible without hazer process as well but the temperature requirement is much higher I think 1400°c while hazer process is completing the same around 600-700°c. At that high temperature even a graphite may turns into ash. To my assumption monolith is using that technology as well but the end product produced is carbon black and not graphite
Hazer process is good because it use less energy and bi product is graphite. If we can purify that graphite then the value addition to hazer process is immense.
So as on date there is no better methane prolysis we know other than iron ore catalyst which can crack methane at such a low temperature. In earlier cases platinum was used as catalyst but the same was too expensive as catalyst.
So for the time being we are in a good position and only improvement requirement is on graphite purification.
