same sex marriage vote - why not?

Why does anyone object to this national vote being held?

I am personally against change, and will vote accordingly, but surely in a democratic nation, we are entitled to be asked directly on important matters such as this?

I think the Swiss model is what we should be going for.

The People should be consulted widely, and more often.

The elite who would deny ordinary citizens a vote are scared of losing control.
