I imagine that despite efforts to reduce energy consumption by eg. improved cooling methods and increased use of renewable energy sources the amount of energy being consumed will only increase.
Increased bandwidth and speed, more devices, more content (especially to support A.I) will drive almost exponential growth in data. This has to be stored somewhere!!
