Japan will commence its ban on all Russian coal from 5.4.23.
Reuters 20.1.23 saidMELBOURNE, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Australia's Whitehaven Coal (WHC) estimates Japan will need around 20 million tonnes of metallurgical coal when its ban on Russian supply takes effect in April, Chief Executive Paul Flynn said on Friday.
Whitehaven said it has seen "quite firm interest" from Japan for metallurgical coal, used in steelmaking, and while Japan was looking for supply in other jurisdictions, it would be hard to match the quality of coal it is used to.
"But as a result, you can see the market's starting to tighten, the forward curve's starting to tighten in that April and May period," Flynn told analysts after the company reported second-quarter production".
Bodes well for more met coal from Australia, & stronger met coal prices- & BCB's SP.
