I bought 3 "eggs" in May for $109US each....only needed 3 to have a team.
I saw some on the weekend for $230 so under $700 to get started. You can earn 50 SLP a day (around $40US a day) if you play every day and costs 500 SLP to breed together with 4 AXS as a fee.

Essentially its linked to ETH price to begin with so buy when ETH drops sell when ETH is high.

PS my team is terrible so I get your point that you may need to spend $1000 to be competitive but you don't have to fork out that much.
