Apart from the long term scenery destruction , Tailings storage and the water catchment in an area where other people could be impacted long term is my main issue - unlikely a tailings dam will leak but it has happened before - RED5 and Brazil with one of the tier1 miners
Greenland , WA, SA do not have the issues with tailings , as mitigated by less people , few earthquakes (Clyde dam history check it ) low precipitation , Pragmatically I am not against underground mining by SMI , as less tailings per tonne of ore produced and can return waste to mine as paste fill to reduce tailings ,
