    Someone else has commented that it was once illegal to short a share. That's correct. You rang the broker and they took your order to execute when ownership was proved. In the 80's shorting meant playing brokers off against each other; sell orders with one buys with another - or you just forgot what you were doing and accidentally sold the idea before buying the fact...It was and should still be outlawed. Shorting has turned the market into a casino that makes the Poseidon adventure look tame.
