In a first for any combat force Australia is to have combat patrols include legal advisers. Legal advisers are currently used in planning airborne attacks.

Should a patrol come under fire it will have immediate access to legal advice on the appropriate response. The legal advice will traverse the range of possible findings of a subsequent tribunal. Like all legal opinion will leave the final decision in the hands of the tribunal and be non definitive.

Troops have requested that the legal advisers lead the patrols at the point and conduct any urgent mediation under fire.
