    There are many ways to produce hydrogen, it's very versatile.
    Bio, thermal, chemical and electrolysis, etc
    Most commercial production is through termal (steam process) and from oil refining.

    Electrolysis is desired process, holly grail of renewable energy solution. But very expensive and energy wasteful process right now. The question is if they can get tech advances and costs down to make it a viable solution.
    The reason is because Solar, wind aren't reliable in respect of constant output.
    So the hydrogen comes in as a way to convert excess energy into potential energy. And because it can be transported like LNG, there is already much infrastructure in place.
    Eliminating the need to build expensive hydro storage, batteries, etc.

    As far as EVs and battery storage, they are not mutually exclusive but beneficial.
    You'll still need batteries to store electricity for power generating fluctuations. And battery EV will still be optimal performer for City personal transportation.
    While hydrogen would be preferable choice for commercial transport, shipping, public transport, personal vehicles that don't have ready access of solar roof and garage. (If you have to park the car on the street in Berlin or New York, etc).

    IMO we'll have mix of both in the futute, each used for their application strenght (providing they can get hydrogen tech commercially viable)
