The Bushfires Would Not Be Happening If I Was Elected Prime Minister,” Says Bill Shorten
The former Labor party leader says the current horror bushfire season could have been easily avoided.
“This is what Australia voted for at the May election,” says Bill Shorten. “They voted for Scott Morrison. They voted for bushfires.”
The stunning claims were made by Mr Shorten as he addressed a union meeting in Sydney today.
“Scott Morrison has dropped the ball on climate change in favour of the coal industry,” he told the delegates. “It’s little wonder large chunks of NSW are now burning.”
Six lives have been lost and more than 720 homes destroyed so far this bushfire season.
Bill Shorten claims his climate change policies as Labor leader would have kept Australia bushfire free.
“Under Labor’s 45% carbon emissions reduction target, temperatures would be significantly lower than they are now,” says Shorten.
“The Coalition’s 26% target has quite literally left us high and dry.”
Currently Labor’s federal member for the seat of Maribyrnong, Bill Shorten has previously ruled out another stint as Labor’s leader.
But at today’s union meeting, he appeared to have changed his tune.
