There was a great doco on SBS last night. Looks like the big bang theory is being very seriously questioned. There clearly was something in existence before what we currently think of as the big bang. There are various theories being mooted, from eternal inflation (economists won't like that!), a Swiss cheese model where our universe is in one of the holes, universes are born (rebound) from the death of older universes and a theory that suggests universes come from singularities within black holes and expand within the boundary (event horizon) of the black hole.
