Aleris are already manufacturing aluminum sheet containing scandium for the aero industry.

"Aleris has introduced new low density alloys – lithium and scandium-containing aluminum alloys – which represent an innovative step forward for aluminum in aerospace.  Weight-savings from these new alloys translate into fuel efficiency and lower operating costs for the airline industry."

"This material can potentially replace traditionally used 2xxx alloys such as 2024 T3 as a drop-in solution without change of the structural design."

Without change of structural design potentially means we could see an earlier move into scandium alloy uptake in aircraft on the order line already, well before the new generation of aircraft get through the design stage. Just need to have a reliable supply with a more realistic and transparent price structure.
As at Jan 31 airbus had a backlog of 6,818 orders. Boeing have 5,813 outstanding orders.

Aleris also provide aluminum sheet to the auto industry.
Once a reliable supply of scandium is available and the price stabilizes at a more realistic level I would think the auto industry would embrace a scandium alloy in their bid to reduce weight whilst retaining strength.
