Entirely disagree and yes I have done my research the claim that Indonesia has overwhelmed the market, burying the nickel and cobalt story, misses several important realities.

First, Indonesia's nickel supply is not as stable as it appears. The country has a history of imposing export bans and taxes, making their supply chain unpredictable. This volatility could lead to shortages, making alternative sources, like those in Australia’s projects, more crucial.Secondly, nickel and cobalt are far from obsolete.

These materials are essential for electric vehicle (EV) batteries, a market that is growing rapidly. With the expansion of EVs, the demand for nickel and cobalt will continue to rise, making it inaccurate to suggest that their story is over. There is also a global trend to diversify supply chains away from reliance on single countries like Indonesia.

This is driven by the need to reduce exposure to geopolitical risks and ensure consistent supply. As companies seek out stable sources of nickel and cobalt, projects outside Indonesia, such as those in Australia, will gain increased importance.

Moreover, scandium, while exciting, doesn't replace the need for nickel and cobalt; it complements them. Scandium improves materials, making them stronger and lighter, but nickel and cobalt are still crucial for battery technology and energy storage solutions.

The idea that nickel and cobalt are no longer relevant fails to consider their unique and irreplaceable roles in the clean energy transition. Finally, sustainability is becoming a major focus for industries and investors alike. Indonesia’s nickel situation has been criticised for its environmental impact, including deforestation and pollution.

As more companies prioritised ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility, sustainable projects with better practices, like those in Australia, will become more appealing. Ithe argument dismissing nickel and cobalt is flawed and ignores the ongoing demand, the importance of supply diversification, and the critical role these materials play in the future of green technologies.
