Sweden Orders Driver-Control Smart Cards From Orga


Sweden’s motor vehicle authority has placed an order with Germany-based Orga Kartensysteme GmbH for smart cards that will be used to monitor the country’s bus and truck drivers. The Swedish National Road Administration, SNRA VÄGVERKET, has placed an initial order for 200,000 chip cards that will be used in on-board devices called tachographs. Bus and truck drivers will receive cards that they will insert into tachographs to record their time driving. Transportation companies and police officers also will receive separate smart cards that will allow them to check the time on the tachographs to ensure that drivers are getting the rest required by law. Orga will develop the tachograph application, embed the modules in the cards and personalize the cards. The card body will be made of polycarbonate for high security and supplied by Austria Card, a specialist in polycarbonate cards, Orga says. This is the second tachograph card contract for Orga, which this summer announced it had won a deal to supply at least 2 million such cards for use in the United Kingdom. The European Union has mandated that all new trucks and buses be equipped with digital tachographs to monitor drivers as of August 2004.
