Even earlier in my career before I rose to the dizzy heights of LAC a group of us drove to the other side of the strip at RAAF Garbutt. Someone had a shotgun and we were duck hunting in the Town Common.

I got bored and started walking back to the lines, but a Lincoln was doing circuits and bumps in the early dark so rather than cross the strip I chose to wait 'til he passed and walked beside the cones. Now a Lincoln is a big four engined bomber, think Lancaster , and this thing bore down on me on my side of the centreline, outboard engine definitely beyond the cones. I dropped but I still think I was slow and the only reason I didn't end up like Jack Newton was because I was between the props. Ops were called off but I was nowhere to be found.

One mate always laughed at that but you guys may be the only living souls to know the story.
