Schizophrenia has been correlated with cannabis usage as some undiagnosed sufferers self medicate prior to receiving the diagnosis (alcohol and other substances also share this correlation). The age of onset for schizophrenia is generally around late adolescence which coincides with the general age of substance experimentation. Self medication is prone to abuse as dosage is not monitored by a professional. When self medicating illegal substances, irregularity of supply is also an issue. Some strains are more suited to certain disorders. With a steady prescribed dose of a consistent quality of product eliminates these issues. This can only occur in a openly legal and regulated environment.

The correlation does not imply causation, and in a clinical sense, though schizophrenics are more likely to suffer from substance abuse, it is treated as a co-occurring disorder, not a cause. Though substance abuse can lead to substance induced psychosis. this is generally not a long term thing (if the patient can manage to reduce or eliminate their addiction).

The major contributing factor to schizophrenia is genetic, yet I'm not aware of any legislation which impedes the right of schizophrenics to procreate.
