so by your logic, koala bear's are the same species are black bears and polar bears, just because that's what (some) people call them

the name is irrelevant - DNA tells us how close or far apart two living entities are in their make-up

IIRC "elephant" was borrowed from Gk "elephantos" which only referred to the ivory of the tusks, not unlike Gk "elaphos" refering to the antlers of deer. Would have thought our traumatic Greek expert in residence would have picked on this.
