There are many, many aspects of science upon which progress builds. There are many theories which are useful stepping stones. Early scientists made good use of the four element theory, early physicians made good use of leeches.

This does not mean that the science is settled, has reached the absolute truth or may not be questioned.

By saying the science is 'settled' there is an implication that the topic is closed and the absolute truth has been reached. It is used as a mechanism to deliberately close debate and hold sceptics in disrepute.

It is not scientific to hold that your own point of view is beyond question. It is religion. Ask a Moslem or Christian they will tell you about their God and that their faith is beyond question.
