The Merchant Caravans that Mohammad raided in order to finance his army of conquest were not persecuting Mohammad, they had no interest in him. They were simply going about their business.

It was Mohammad that needed funds to pay for arms in order to carry out Jihad, and saw the caravans as means to an end. The suffering caused to the Merchants and their retainers being of little consideration.....unless you happened to be one of their number.
